THE HOCKEY IS LIFE! TEAM WELCOMES GRANT FUHR AS OUR SPECIAL GUEST FOR OUR 2ND ANNUAL FUNDRAISING WEEKEND! |
Born in Spruce Grove, Alberta on September 28, 1962, Grant Fuhr redefined the role of the NHL goaltender, playing with and against some of the greatest players of all time. Drafted by the Edmonton Oilers 8th overall in the 1981 draft, He played for the Oilers for 10 seasons, where he teamed up first with Andy Moog then Bill Ranford to form one of the most formidable goaltending tandems in history, winning the Stanley Cup four times in five seasons (1983-84 through 1987-88), adding a fifth Stanley Cup in 1990. Grant holds the record for the most points in a season by a goaltender, won the Vezina Trophy (best goaltender) and the William Jennings Trophy (lowest goals-against in a season), was an NHL All-Star six times and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003. We are privileged to welcome Grant Fuhr to the Cowichan Valley!

IN SEPTEMBER 2010, THE HOCKEY IS LIFE! TEAM WELCOMED GORDIE HOWE AS OUR INAUGURAL SPECIAL GUEST! |
Born in Floral, Saskatchewan on March 31, 1928, Gordie Howe epitomized strength, agility and longevity, playing in the NHL through five different decades. Considered one of the greatest players to ever lace up their skates, Gordie won four Stanley Cups, six Hart trophies (most valuable player), six Art Ross trophies (most points in a single season) and was given an NHL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Coming out of retirement to play with his sons, Marty & Mark, Gordie played with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers of the WHA through the 1970s. In 1980, the four remaining WHA teams merged with the NHL, and Gordie played one final season in the NHL. He is currently ranked number 2 all-time in career goals and number 3 all-time in career points. We were privileged to welcome Mr. Hockey® to the Cowichan Valley for the first time in decades!
